Bleeding

How-To:

Please refer to your motorcycle's specific repair procedure for the correct brake bleeding procedure.

Procedure :

 Procedure, Front:
1. Disassemble the reservoir and remove most of the old brake fluid.
    Tip: see Tip section below for a low-cost brake bleed bottle.
2. Push back the brake piston (use a suitable "reset device" to keep the piston back).
3. Bleed the hand brake cylinder (bleed nipple near reservoir).
4. Bleed the left and right calipers conventionally until new brake fluid is visible at the bleed screw. 
5. Follow this up with a Brake Bleed Test in GS-911. Bleed the calipers again.
   Repeat this procedure until no further air is expelled from either caliper.
6. Bleed the hand brake cylinder AGAIN.
7. Reassemble the brake.
8. Ensure correct fluid level, making sure the reservoir is not over filled!
9. Clean the rim of the reservoir, cap and diaphragm, and carefully reassemble the components.

 Procedure, Rear:
1. Disassemble the reservoir, remove diaphragm and draw out most of the old brake fluid.
    Tip: see Tip section below for a low-cost brake bleed bottle.
2. Push back the brake piston (use a suitable "reset device" to keep the piston back).
3. Bleed the caliper conventionally until new brake fluid is visible at the bleed screw. 
4. Follow this up with a Brake Bleed Test in GS-911. Bleed the caliper again.
   Repeat this procedure until no further air is expelled from either caliper.
5. Reassemble the brake.
6. Ensure correct fluid level, making sure the reservoir is not over filled!
7. Clean the rim of the reservoir, cap and diaphragm, and carefully reassemble the components.

 

Specifications:

S1000RR:
Brake fluid................................................ DOT 4
Tightening torque: Bleed screw near Front reservoir......... 5 Nm
Tightening torque: Bleed screws on Front calipers........... 6 Nm
Tightening torque: Front caliber mounting bolts............ 38 Nm
Tightening torque: Bleed screws on Rear caliper............ 14 Nm

 

Why?

Once you have bled the brakes, follow the Bleed Tests on your GS-911. This will ensure you remove the old fluid from the ABS9M unit, and more importantly remove any residual air that could remain in the control circuit of the ABS system.

Once you have run the specific bleed test, repeat the brake bleed again, and watch for any air coming from the system. If any air was released, you should repeat the bleed and bleed test procedures, until there is no more air in the system.

This should of course be done for BOTH front and rear circuits!

 

More on Bleed Tests?

During the Bleed Tests, the pump motor is switched on. While it is on, you will actuate the corresponding brake lever several times. Generally 3 times, holding it in for roughly 2 seconds each time before releasing it. The exact description is found in the GS-911 Bleed Test procedure.

The pump makes a loud noise (same as when it is activated using the output tests in GS-911) and when you actuate the lever you will feel the vibrations and hear what can only be described as a growling noise - this is normal!
