Okavango, Caprivi and into Zambia

Entry 4 : From Windhoek we set of east through Gobabis to the Botswana border post, to the Okavango Delta and into Namibia's Caprivi strip.

It was suggested that we spend a night or two at Drotsky's Cabins (we camped in our tents - great facilities!).  That evening round the bar the owner Jan and Manager Piet, were telling tall tales of the pythons that attack their small dogs... and the 12 Back Mambas in campsite 14... As we walked the dark path to our camp site (luckily not 14!), we came across this one... must have been around 3m already..

Next we headed off into namibia again. Below is Kobus on the stretch of dirt road to the Trans Caprivi Highway (B8)... beautiful!

We stopped at the Popa falls (Popa Falls restcamp)... the river is in flood, so much so that half the camp site is under water.  As we got off the bikes, as if magically, a man on a mokoro came drifting through the Hippo grass, and offered to take us to the falls on his Mokoro (dugout made from a solid Mopane tree)... we couldn't refuse! Half way through the trip I realized we didn't even ask the price... hmmm eager tourists... Luckily it turned out not too expensive - N$100 /person)

As you can see the river is very muchin flood... and it was a rough ride... and now was NOT the time to negotiate... (I have a feeling the stability of the mokoro is directly proportional to the fee ;-) ).  We were a little worried as the river was quite choppy and I don't think we would have floated all that well with our boots!

We met a German tourist along the way, who suggested we spen the next night at Zambezi Lodge in Katima Mulilo. Here we are at sunset, with the great Zambezi in the background, and Zambia on the other bank.

At the Zambezi Lodge we met Phillip and Kobi who traveled up from George, through the Chobe reserve on their bikes (a F800ST and K1200GT) - of course we couldn't resist giving them a GS-911 demo... reading their trouble codes and resetting the Service reminder that was not reset with Kobi's last service! ;-)

We are writing this from Livingston, at the Victoria Falls... so now it's off to the falls, snapping some pictures, before we head into the Lusaka direction!

Till next time...
